Schools on Board Circumpolar Inuit field program

ICC Canada is a partner in the IPY-CFL project study of the flaw lead or polynya in the Beaufort Sea, south of Banks Island. Comprised of 10 science teams, the CFL study will integrate western traditional science and Inuvialuit traditional knowledge to gain a comprehensive understanding of the flaw lead, influencing processes and the significance of the system to the environment and communities.

Individual dispatches from the participants are listed below.

These dispatches are also available on the IPY-CFL website at::

The Circumpolar Inuit field program is the only Schools on Board Inuit-specific field program involving participants from Alaska, Russia, Greenland and Canada. Inuit youth will have a unique opportunity to learn about the communities of the ISR through tours and visits, and will board the CCGS Amundsen for a first-hand look at CFL science occurring onboard. Over the course of approximately 14 days, these youth participants will share traditional knowledge and climate change perspectives from their communities with each other, scientists and Elders from the Inuvialuit Settlement region. A series of discussions and sessions with Inuit youth and researchers to learn about similarities and differences in sea ice use, climate change effects, and adaptation needs will preclude a youth/Elder/scientist knowledge exchange workshop and community visit to be held in Sachs Harbour, NWT.

Many of our participants have been preparing for months and have traveled long distances and ICC (Canada) wishes to thank the many supporters who have helped to ensure this opportunity is not missed.
