Delegates Meeting Ilulissat 2023
July 17 – 21, 2023 – Ilulissat, Greenland
The ICC Delegates Meeting convened in Ilulissat, Greenland, for its first in-person International gathering since the global pandemic. The gathering brought together Inuit delegates from across the circumpolar regions to reflect on ICC’s progress, take note of recent developments, advance ICC work plans, and celebrate Inuit unity and culture.
The event underscored the collective determination of Inuit communities to assert their rights and sovereignty, featuring a series of keynotes, panels, and breakout sessions aimed at developing cohesive strategies to influence international policies affecting Inuit populations.
The gathering also prominently featured the voices of Inuit youth, who are playing an increasingly critical role in advocacy and leadership. Young delegates presented innovative approaches to addressing community challenges and highlighted the importance of youth engagement in the ongoing advocacy for Inuit rights.
ICC Chair, Sara Olsvig, emphasized the importance of international collaboration and advocacy in her remarks: “Engaging in dialogue and learning from and with each other is key for our Inuit unity. Our in-person gatherings are therefore crucial to the work that we do on the international level. We bring the Inuit voice from each region and community through listening to our delegates. By addressing many specific themes, we gain a better understanding of the challenges we share as well as the successes we can build upon. That is why our gatherings are so important.”
As the assembly concluded, participants left with renewed energy and a clear roadmap for future actions. The ICC remains committed to championing the rights of Inuit peoples, ensuring that their voices are heard and respected in all international forums.
The ICC expressed its gratitude to the community and Mayor of Avannaata Kommunia, Palle Jerimiassen, for their meticulous organization and hosting of the meeting and cultural program.
The 15th ICC General Assembly is scheduled to take place in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, in 2026.
