Thanks to the Department of Canadian Heritage – Indigenous Language Component, ICC Canada has received a grant to support and celebrate culture and language in Canada.

In celebration of the first year of the United Nations Decade of Indigenous Languages, ICC Canada will run a project called “ICC – Canada Inuit Artist of the Month”.

Each month beginning January 2023 to December 2023 an Inuit artist will be featured through ICC’s podcast Unikkaat – Circumpolar Waves – Inuit Artist of the Month series. The artists and cultural expression may include musicians, throat singing, drumming, rap, pop, the art and techniques of Inuit design and clothing, seamstresses, fashion, bead work, amautik design, carvers, jewellers, chefs/traditional recipes/food production and preparation, dance, visual arts, basket weaving, interior design and even Inuit athletics and more.

The featured artist will receive $5000.00 CAD to support their work, record a podcast with Unikkaat – Circumpolar Waves, speak on the radio, post on their social media with ICC support and then distributed within the ICC network and beyond.

ICC will be responsible for supporting the artist by developing the podcasts, supporting other opportunities, posting, and advertising.

To qualify the Artist must:

  • Have an interest in Inuit culture, way of life, both within the regional context and internationally with Inuit from other countries.
  • Be able and willing to speak and conduct a podcast interview in Inuktut or Qablunaatitut.
  • Be willing to have photos shared of the Artist and their work on ICC’s public networks.

  • Be registered with one of the recognized Inuit Land Claim Organizations in Canada.
  • Not have received any bursaries, grants or scholarships to develop or expand their artwork within the last 12 months starting from November 2022.
