Press Advisory – Pikialasorsuaq Meeting of the Parties September 2024

The Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) and Qiqiktani Inuit Organization (QIA) are organizing the first Meeting of the Parties for Pikialasorsuaq, focused on the issue of joint management of the region. The meeting will take place at Hotel Hans Egede, September 11th from 08.30-16.30, and September 12th from 08.30 – 12:00, 2024.

ICC launched the Pikialasorsuaq initiative by establishing the Pikialasorsuaq Commission in 2016, whose recommendations are to establish an Inuit-led management area on and around Pikialasorsuaq, further define the boundaries of the area and ensure free mobility for Inuit across the borders of Canada and Greenland.

ICC and QIA are pleased that the Government of Greenland and the Government of Canada have taken concrete steps to advance the Commission’s recommendations including the Letter of Intent in Reykjavik on October 19, 2023.

The purpose of the meeting will be to follow up on the Letter of Intent, discuss and provide recommendations to the respective governments, and discuss the further development of an Inuit-led management area at Pikialasorsuaq between Greenland and Canada.

The meeting is open to be followed by representatives of the press.

The Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) is an Indigenous Peoples’ Organization (IPO), founded in 1977 to promote and celebrate the unity of 180,000 Inuit from Alaska (USA), Canada, Greenland, and Chukotka (Russia). ICC works to promote Inuit rights, safeguard the Arctic environment, and protect and promote the Inuit way of life. In regard to climate change, we believe that it is crucial for world leaders and governments to recognize, respect and fully implement the human rights of Inuit and all other Indigenous peoples across the globe.
